Marie wandered slowly through the rooms of her gallery. She looked at the pictures hanging on the walls and pulled a worried face. How much longer could she keep the gallery going? She was getting deeper and deeper into debt, with absolutely no prospect of making money in the near future. There just weren’t enough clients. She could look at it however she liked, she was even deeper in the red this month. Damn and blast it!
Oh well, maybe a client or two would come by today. They say you should never give up hope...
At home that evening, Marie slumped on her sofa, feeling sorry for herself. George, Marie’s tabby cat, jumped onto her lap and started purring. Tenderly stroking him, Marie had a serious think. She hadn’t managed any new sales. It was enough to drive a girl mad!
She was just about to go and make a cup of tea when the phone rang. She lifted the receiver and said her name, “Marie”.
“Hi babe, it’s me,” chirped her friend Sabine.
“Hey!” Marie said cheerfully, and plumped down on the settee.
“And? Everything all right your end?” asked Sabine.
“Well....How about you?” replied Marie.
“Wonderful! I bet you haven’t eaten yet, have you?”
“How did you know? But I was actually just on my way to the shops,” Marie answered truthfully.
“Well you needn’t worry about that now. Come out to dinner, my treat! How do you fancy Tambosi’s?”
“Sabine! You don’t have to do that!” Marie remonstrated – but at that very moment her stomach rumbled so loudly, Sabine must have been able to hear it.
“I know, I know! That’s decided, then – I’ll pick you up in ten minutes!”
“The gallery’s not doing too well, is it?” asked Sabine carefully once they were sat in their favourite restaurant, Tambosi’s, enjoying their meal.
“Things could be better,” Marie replied.
“Is it really that bad?” asked Sabine.
“Yes, at the moment,” Marie replied curtly, concentrating on her food.
“Don’t give up! You’re bound to sell more soon!” Sabine said encouragingly.
Marie gave a little laugh. “As long as it happens soon! Otherwise I don’t know how I’m going to pay the rent! Let alone meals on a regular basis! You can’t keep feeding me all the time!”
Marie was, of course, glad that Sabine was trying to cheer her up. Just as she was glad to have a friend like Sabine, full stop.
When she had moved here two years ago, she hadn’t known anyone. She had left all her friends and family behind. She had met Sabine and her friends in a pub here in London. The women hit it off the first time they met, and soon became firm friends. And Sabine had been the one to show her around town. Marie soon made friends with all of Sabine’s crowd, and settled down more quickly with their help
“When you’re the most successful gallery owner in town you can take me out to dinner in a five-star restaurant,” laughed Sabine, tearing Marie out of her reverie.
“You’re on!” promised Marie, and meant it.
